There’s nowhere with the accessibility, the variety of skiable terrain, the caliber of restaurants or the small town feel other than Park City.
Steamboat Springs, Colorado has been known as Ski Town, USA since they first unveiled the brand in 1959. And they take that moniker pretty seriously.
So seriously, in fact, that they sued Salt Lake City for claiming to be “Ski City, USA” in a marketing campaign last year. Granted, their whole goal was to draw ski tourism from Colorado to Utah. Something that Steamboat Springs was obviously opposed to.
Trademarks are trademarks and intellectual property merits respect, but we can’t help but claim that Park City feels a little ski town-esque maybe even more so than Ski Town, USA. With two ski resorts lining the town (including the biggest ski resort in the country), a historic district filled with mom-and-pop shops and award-winning restaurants for your aprés-ski, it’s pretty clear that the modern-day Park City was built with skiers in mind.
We may not be able to legally call ourselves Ski Town, USA, so maybe we’ll just stick with Ski Town, Utah. There may be resorts in Utah with more advanced terrain or maybe even more snowfall, but there is no place in Utah where you can get the whole experience.
There’s nowhere with the accessibility, the variety of skiable terrain, the caliber of restaurants or the small town feel. You might get one or two of these factors somewhere else, but you’re not going to find it all in one place. Whether you’re looking in Utah…or even the entire USA.
When you’re looking for a ski vacation home, how much time do you really want to spend traveling from the airport to the resorts? Personally, I’d like that commute to be as short as possible.
Since Park City is only 30 minutes (or 20 if you ask a local) from the Salt Lake City airport, you can literally be on the chairlift within an hour of touching down.
Steamboat can keep the nickname. Park City will prove its merit based on experiences.
